Lawrence Hamm, chairman of POP, said the main reason for the march and demonstration was to bring attention to the issue of police brutality and to support a petition by the American Civil Liberties Union seeking a federal investigation of the Newark Police Department. The ACLU petition, filed in September, claims the police department routinely violates residents’ civil rights through excessive force and false arrests.

Lawrence Hamm, of the Newark-based Peoples Organization for Progress, says the Kochs “are part of the worldwide strategy of imperialist domination; controlling the resources such as oil and natural gas.”

“It is an unfortunate thing to say, but the war in Afghanistan is really dragging the nation down,” said Lawrence Hamm, chairman of the Newark-based Peoples Organization for Progress. “How can the Obama administration continue to spend a trillion dollars on war, while our nation’s infrastructure continues to crumble?”
Mr. Hamm said the budget situation in New Jersey was at a crucial point with no light or solution at the end of the tunnel.
