On Monday, July 16th, the Justice Monday protests against Police Brutality will continue. For over 120 consecutive Mondays, the People’s Organization for Progress (P.O.P) has been rallying to spotlight New Jersey’s underreported police brutality cases: The cases of Jerome Reid, Kashad Ashford, Abdul Kamal, Radazz Hearns Darryl Fuqua.
The rally takes place in front of the Federal Building, 970 Broad Street, Newark at 5pm. This week’s rally will mark the 128th consecutive Justice Monday protest!
This week’s rally comes on the heels of the shooting of a Chicago barber Harith ‘Snoop’ Barber just a few days ago. Scores of Chicago Police Officers emerged onto the scene in the aftermath of the incident and also used unwarranted force on nonviolent protesters responding to the incident. Heightening the intensity of these incidents is the story of a Chicago Police officer caught on tape telling two young Black men filming him “I kill m*f*ckers” just several days earlier.
This week’s rally also marks the anniversary of the police killing of Randy Weaver in East Orange back on July 16th, 1999. Weaver was killed in an incident where East Orange Police officers fired into a car in which Weaver was a passenger suspecting that the car was stolen, hitting Weaver, and then denying him emergency medical services that could have saved his life. Weaver’s mother, Mary Weaver, would go on to become a Vice Chair of P.O.P. and a national figure in her own right supporting mothers who also lost children to police violence until her death in 2014…
