“Celebrating 29 + Years 1983 – 12012”

October 22, 2012

Letter sent to each Newark City Council Member, City Clerk, and Mayor) :

The People’s Organization for Progress wants to formally restate its request to have a major street in the city of Newark renamed after our own native son and world renowned playwright, the People’s Poet, former New Jersey State Poet Laureate and champion of justice, the honorable Amiri Baraka.  Mr. Baraka has long been an advocate for social and economic change whose lifelong commitment to advancing this city warrants this distinction.

While most cities only bestow such honors on greats after their deaths, we are of the firm position that this should happen while Mr. Baraka is still living. We believe that we also have an important precedent for this with the historic renaming of Waverly Avenue after the legendary Muhammad Ali. Further, on that same note, while an important world figure of our time who was very generous to Newark, Muhammad Ali never lived in Newark. Mr. Baraka, himself a global figure, has and still lives in our city and still works for the best in our city.

We are sure others will join in this request. We are willing to sit down and work with the City to make this honor happen.
