“Celebrating 29 + Years 1983 – 2012”

November 20, 2012

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC  20500

Dear President Obama:

On behalf of the People’s Organization for Progress, I would like to proudly and humbly express our most heartfelt congratulations on your historic re-election!

Our organization, perhaps NJ’s most visible social justice organization approaching its 30th anniversary of public service, very rarely endorses candidates for office in order to insure our longstanding reputation for independence. However, in the case of your historic nomination in 2008 and just recently in the case of your historic bid for re-election, we felt it necessary to part from that practice. We are proud and glad that we did.

Understanding the dangerously unsteady social, political and economic climate that we live in together, last year we initiated a 381 day protest campaign for jobs that we called the Daily People’s Protest Campaign for Jobs, Peace, Equality and Justice. With the endorsement of 179 organizations, we rallied and protested for 381 consecutive days in honor of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, including three major marches and rallies! We have since renewed that campaign and have co-hosted a major march and rally on November 13th to restate the critical issues that drove the campaign, a call for a national jobs program, a moratorium on home foreclosures, universal health care for all, an end to student debt and insure access to an affordable college education, stop privatization of public education, preserve workers’ rights and collective bargaining, and the immediate return of all U.S. troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, and more.

While we proudly acknowledge and appreciate your efforts to bring home our troops from Iraq and to legislate the creation of health care, we still have over 20 million people out of work. The U.S. Military is still in Afghanistan. Many in the world, especially in Africa, decried the recent military action against Libya. Many throughout the world are also upset at U.S. Military’s continued use of drone attacks in undeclared wars that are harming innocent civilians everywhere they take place. The foreclosure crisis is shrinking our middle class like nothing we have seen in years, and young people saddled with the high cost of higher education, only to then enter a bleak job market, are in an increasingly cynical place when they should be reinvigorating our body politic with the optimism of their potential.

We, therefore, implore you to give serious consideration to the demands of our economic justice campaign and use the unique authority of your office, including creative use of the executive order, to make job creation at a living wage, peace, and hope real.
